Statement of the Executive of the NDP Riding Association of NDG-Westmount concerning the invasion of the Ukraine by the army of the Russian Federation

Along with many other Canadian citizens we are preoccupied by the suffering of the people of Ukraine caused by this invasion. We want to express our complete solidarity with the Ukrainian people. We wish, as well, to express our complete solidarity with all the Russian people who have demanded an end to the war and the respect of human rights despite savage repression.

We encourage all our fellow citizens to contribute to humanitarian aid for the Ukraine and to participate in welcoming Ukrainian refugees who come to Canada. We think the Canadian and Quebec governments need to participate, to the maximum of their resources in providing humanitarian aid. We think also that both levels of government must welcome Ukrainian refugees, without discrimination, while minimizing immigration formalities and providing them with the assistance they require in Canada. Finally we demand that that the Government of Canada send to Ukraine the means available so that the Ukrainian people can defend themselves against this invasion.

This war and all the suffering it brings does not represent a solution to the problems of this region of the world. The Ukrainian people, like all the peoples of the world must freely choose their government and their destiny.

Like many people in Québec, Canada and the whole world we are shaken by this violence and suffering. The only solution is an immediate cease fire and negotiations for a durable peace.
