We note that Anna Gainey has written a letter to the presidents of Canadian universities asking them to justify their codes of conduct in light of recent events in the Middle East. It is important that criminal acts of hate speech be prosecuted under the law; it also important to preserve Canadians’ right to free speech, in universities and elsewhere. To that end, we have three questions for Ms. Gainey:
Can she offer any specific examples of unprosecuted criminal hate speech on Canadian campuses?
Can she affirm her commitment to the principles of freedom of expression and academic discussion?
Can she affirm her commitment to the principle of academic debate, free of government intimidation?
